Color vision testing

Know what to expect before your exam.

New applicants may need to pass color vision testing using an FAA-approved method. Type1Medical offers Waggoner Color Vision testing as an add-on to your visit.

Information under review

This page reflects preliminary guidance and pricing provided to Type1Medical. Final FAA requirements, eligibility details, and the testing fee must be confirmed before launch.

Approved testing methods

Beginning in 2025, new applicants must complete color vision testing using one of these three approved methods:

CAD

One of the three approved color vision testing methods for new applicants.

RCT

One of the three approved color vision testing methods for new applicants.

Waggoner

The approved color vision testing method available at Type1Medical.

Previously held a medical certificate?

If you previously held a medical certificate and passed color vision testing, you may be exempt from additional testing. Bring a copy of your previous medical certificate to your appointment.

How passing and retesting work

One passing test

Only one passing approved test is required for medical certification.

More than one attempt

You may take any or all approved testing methods as needed. Not passing one method does not prevent you from trying another.

Third Class limitation

If you do not pass any of the approved methods, you may still qualify for a Third Class medical certificate limited to VFR daytime flying.
