What to expect

Your exam, start to finish.

Most pilots are in and out in under an hour with a certificate in hand. Here's how the visit works and what to have ready.

Five steps

  1. Complete FAA MedXPress

Fill out your application at medxpress.faa.gov before your appointment and write down the confirmation number. We cannot start the exam without it.

  2. Answer the preflight questions

Our short questionnaire tells you whether to book an exam directly or contact us first, and builds your personalized document checklist.

  3. Come to your appointment

Exams are scheduled as a one-hour appointment. Bring your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids so we test you the way you fly.

  4. The exam itself

Vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a general physical. First class applicants may need an EKG depending on age.

  5. Leave with your result

When everything is straightforward, your certificate is printed and handed to you before you leave. If the FAA needs to review something, we explain exactly what happens next.

Bring these to every exam

  • A government-issued photo ID
  • Your FAA MedXPress confirmation number
  • Your pilot certificate, if you already hold one

Depending on your medical history you may need more. The preflight questions build a checklist specific to you.

Common questions

How long is my medical certificate valid?

It depends on class and your age. First class is 6 or 12 months, second class is 12 months, and third class is 24 or 60 months. We confirm your expiration date at the exam.

What if I take medication?

Most medications are fine. Bring a complete list with dosages. A few are disqualifying, which is exactly why the preflight questions ask.

What is a deferral?

A deferral means the AME cannot issue on the spot and the FAA reviews your case instead. The preflight questions exist to prevent surprise deferrals by getting your records in order first.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Scheduling online through the booking page is the fastest way, and it makes sure we have enough time set aside for your certificate class.

Can you help with a Special Issuance?

Yes. We help assemble and submit documentation, and stay with you while the FAA reviews the case.
